Post #20: Something to Note - Jak & Jil

In the fashion world, images can mean everything. It's not only about how a piece of clothing works in person; it has to work on the glossy pages of magazines and in photographs as well. Online, there are many fashion photobloggers who influence the design world through the images they capture. Something to note this week is the Jak & Jil blog. Founded by Tommy Ton (image below), Jak & Jil documents it all. Whether it be a shoe, a purse, a hat, or a whole look...whether it be from New York fashion week or on the streets of Milan, Tommy Ton's photographs are at the top of the ranks of sartorial fame.

Post #19: Fashion on Film - What a Way to Go!

On the very first day of my Costume Design class at Colgate, the professor began by writing the following quote on the board: "Fashion is about the outfit. Costume is about character." Yet, every time we choose to don a specific outfit, aren't we trying to play a certain character? Whether it be the laid-back prepster, the athlete, or the girl who's going out for the night, we choose our outfits to fulfill certain functions.

This week, the "Fashion on Film" video is the movie trailer for 1964's "What a Way to Go!" starring Shirley Maclaine.

In 1964, the film cost $20 million to make because of its elaborate sets, star-studded cast, and its $500,000 costume budget. Nowadays "regular studio film" costume budgets begin at approximately $100,000. That being said, these costumes are something worth noting. Designed by Edith Head, who in her lifetime garnered eight academy awards for her work, these outfits are the stuff of fantasies (watch the entire movie to fully understand what I mean by this). If my closet consisted of these, plus the 3.5 million dollars worth of Harry Winston jewels that were loaned out for the movie, I might just die and go to fashion heaven. So, watch, enjoy, and get inspired for all the costumes you don in your own life.

Post #16: Vanity Fair's 2011 Hollywood Issue

Covers of magazines are often something to note. They're the first impression the reader gets of the content and how they look often determines how many issues get sold at newsstands. Evoking old Hollywood glamour in an exciting (and daringly bare) way, the styling of this year's Hollywood Issue by Vanity Fair is something to fashionably note...and is definitely not a magazine issue to miss. The fold-out cover features Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhall, Jesse Eisenberg, Jennifer Lawrence, Noomi Rapace, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gorden-Leviit, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, and Robert Duvall. Dress credits are currently unfound, with the exception of the stylist saying that the women's dresses ranged from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent, but nevertheless they are gorgeous.

Post #15: Something to Note - Band of Outsiders Spring 2011 Lookbook

Founded in 2004, the fashion line Band of Outsiders has one of the most visually striking (and star-studded) lookbooks for Spring 2011. Here's a sample of the photographs taken:

Post #14: Fashion on Film - The Curve of Forgotten Things

Directed by Todd Cole and with music by Deerhunter, Rodarte's latest fashion film "The Curve of Forgotten Things" (named after a Richard Brautigan poem of the same title) hits the mark when it comes to evoking a mood. Highlighting their Spring 2011 collection, which drew inspiration from 1970s northern California, the film takes on a surreal quality as Elle Fanning moves from scene to scene. Each outfit change is striking and the Alice in Wonderland-esque exploration quality of the film's narrative keeps the viewer intrigued. My personal favorite is the golden armour-like dress which shows up around the 5:20 mark (and is also highlighted in the trailer). And to think: Fanning is only 12.

In anticipation of the weekend and all the partying that tends to accompany it, I thought I'd share with you one of my new favorite finds: Footzyrolls. So whether you’re a Colgate student who has to deal with the weather and the terrain or just a girl who likes going out (whether it be bar-hopping in the city or going to a fancy party), listen up.
Let’s face it, most cute going out shoes tend to have high heels and painful straps. I know that most of us girls have at least one pair of shoes that fit this mold sitting in our closets as we wait for a sexy mood to strike that will make us willing to kill our feet in the name of looking good. After all, Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw can wear Monolo Blahnik’s every day, so why shouldn’t we don our heels once in a while?
Yet, by the time 1:30 or 2 o’clock rolls around and you’ve been dancing or on your feet all night, those heels start to seem like a pretty bad mistake. Hence the handiness of Footzyrolls. Just when your feet are so sore that you can barely walk (or worse…bleeding), you can breathe a sigh of relief as you pull out these flats that roll up so tightly that they can fit into a clutch.

Water-proof and skid-proof, these flats have been worn by celebrities such as Blake Lively, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kim Kardashian, Rachel Weisz, and Rihanna. And unlike similar shoes such as Dr. Scholl’s “Fast Flats,” Footzyrolls come in a plethora of colors and patterns and have garnered good reviews in terms of being able to handle the elements, or at least a night of walking.

Footzyrolls come in sizes 6-11.5 and on average cost between $20 and $30 dollars (personally I'm a fan of the $20 navy striped ones with the detachable bow). They even include a bag for your heels and a pouch for the Footzyrolls. And while they may not be the best-looking shoes you'll ever buy, they may be the most utile ones you ever carry in your purse.

Post #11: One For the Boys

At the request of a few male readers of this blog, I thought I would specifically dedicate a post to the sex that tends to be forgotten or mentioned as an afterthought when it comes to fashion. And while you may think that perhaps you’re “too straight” or too uncaring about your looks to read this, think again. Because, while girls may first notice your face, your hair, or your build, eventually we do check out what you’re wearing.
While based on my preferences you’d all ideally attempt to channel Chuck Bass from the CW’s Gossip Girl while getting dressed in the morning…

…I know that most of you won't. So, in an effort to spark a few tweaks or just a little more daring, I thought I’d write this list of Dos and Don’ts for the guy who doesn’t want to just look good, but who wants to look better.
  • DO: Feel “ok” sticking to your wardrobe of a button-down or polo with jeans, even though it may not be the most fashionable (tell me, is this a taboo word in the male vernacular?) thing on the block.
  • DON'T: Feel so comfortable in it that you wear it every day. The girls in your life will eventually get sick of that gray polo you have and your rotation of three pairs of jeans. Branch out.

  • DO: Try to enjoy shopping…even if it’s only for funnily patterned boxers.
  • DON’T: Enjoy those boxers so much that you let them hang out for the entire world to see. Pants…should cover your butt.

  • DO: Pull off an “I don’t really try to look this good” image by dressing like Jude Law in The Holiday.

  • DON’T: Dress like Fabio.

  • DO: Wear Sperry’s, Loafers, Vans, and nice boots.
  • DON’T: Wear ugly sneakers out and about. Save them for the gym.

  • DO: Be brave enough to look at the Banana Republic and Bottega Veneta Spring Ready-to-Wear collections (I know that might sound like fashion gibberish, so just look at these pictures).

                                                   Bottega Veneta                                                      Banana Republic
  • DON’T: Think you're too good for fashion advice.
  • DO: Have fun with outerwear. Peacoats are always my top choice because of their level of classiness (try tucking a scarf in dark or muted colors into one), but other fun jackets will work too.
Sometimes looking like an astronaut is cool?
Jacket by Paul Smith
  • DON'T: Feel constrained by fashion advice. Feel free to forge your own path. I'm not telling you that it's ok to wear mandals, but I am telling you it's ok to change it up. Wear sweaters, sweater vests, cool jackets, corduroys (not too tight please!), etc. Keep your own look and stick to it. Sometimes a simple well-cut white t-shirt and a pair of dark-wash jeans are the best combination.

So whether you want to look like James Bond and wear an insanely well-cut tuxedo, wear a varsity sweater and feel like a laid-back prepster, or wear the obnoxious mash-up of plaid Madras pants from Ralph Lauren or Brooks Brothers (as long as you wear a plain shirt on top), choose your own style and go with it. And just remember...always keep it classy.
