Post #117: Golden Globes 2013 Worst Dressed
It happens every year and it happened again. The mighty rose and the unfortunate fell. While I loved most of the wide plunging necklines on the runway, I hated the awkward just-above-the-ankle/not-quite-tea-length skirts that kept showing up. For some, like Anne Hathaway, I questioned whether they looked at how boxy dresses could affect a midriff. For others, like Rachel Weisz, only sheer beauty could combat a sheer polka dot-bottomed affair. Yet others (we'll get to you later, Jennifer Lawrence) still leave me struggling.
But for now, The Mannequin presents the Red Carpet Bottom Five:
5. Kelly Osbourne: The girl can pull off purple hair (love it!), but unfortunately this alien gray/green Zac Posen gown missed the mark. The deconstructed feel made for an unflattered torso and a less than polished look.
4. Jessica Chastain: Seafoam waves could've made this red-head a gorgeously modern little mermaid...but her Calvin Klein gown just gave her a wrinkly and drooping chest.
3. Giuliana Rancic: This black and nude lace Celia Kritharioti combo screamed antique funeral. I wish that Giuliana would skip the high black necklines for once, as they only serve to make this gorgeous woman look severe.
2. Emily Mortimer: To take a line from Sassy Gay Friend: What, what, WHAT are you doing? This space age silver turtle neck managed to be both unfortunate and frumpy.
1. Sienna Miller: The normally fashionable Ms. Miller apparently did not learn from last year's Michelle Williams Valentino daisy dress mistake. The two-piece Erdem ensemble was a huge floral DON'T. The top's construction gave the beautiful actress boxy shoulders and while the skirt hugged her curves, the stick-out flowers were more than a little arts and craftsy.

Post #116: The Best of the Golden Globes
I'm more than pleased to say it, but this year it seemed like there were many more DOs than DON'Ts on the Golden Globe Red Carpet and stage. From our stunning hosts to ladies in red and stunners in black, I couldn't help but applaud actresses and stylists alike.
In honor of these fashionable ladies, I present you with The Mannequin's Golden Globes 2013 Top Five in their very own post:
5. Marion Cotillard: One of the great things about the Globes is that they give actresses some wiggle room to have a little fun. Cotillard took this cue and stood out by going short. It took me a few looks to get used to the asymmetrical draping of her Christian Dior by Raf Simons dress, but then I was sure that she just looked red hot.
4. Tina Fey: While I wasn't the biggest fan of Tina Fey's awkwardly tea-length red carpet gown, I couldn't help but think she looked fabulous when she stepped out on the Golden Globe stage. The hair style and color were perfect. Her body looked amazing. And that blue dress was slinky fabulous. The only thing I can't find online? Who it's by! Not to mention a lack of pictures...
3. Lucy Liu: Who knew that matte floral print could rock the red carpet boat so well? Another gown that took a few looks, Liu's blue Carolina Herrera number was silently stunning.
2. Julianne Hough: Rock of Ages? Try Rock CHIC. Hough was a punk princess tonight in Monique Lhuillier. Harsher metallic pieces fell into dreamy layers of tulle in this white and gold gown. What made it even more special though were her accessories: a gold Ferragamo clutch, a very "natural" ear cuff, and a perfect updo.
1. Kate Hudson: Hudson was simple and stunning in her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress. While I think it looked even better live, the picture speaks for itself.

Post #95: Smells Similar - Golden Globes 2012
E!'s Fashion Police has the segment "Bitch Stole My Look," other papers and magazines do "Who Wore It Better?" pieces. While this post won't be comparing Julie Bowen to Olivia Wilde, or pitting actresses wearing the same exact outfit against each other, it will be looking at the dresses at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards that truly seemed to reference looks from the past. And unfortunately, these references were just not quite as good as the originals.
Claire Danes: Miss Danes seemed to receive quite a few accolades for her black and white J. Mendel gown. However, all that I could think of was the silhouette of Cate Blanchett's Givenchy Haute Couture gown from the 2011 Oscars. And quite frankly, both dresses just miss the mark.
Laura Dern: Perhaps she was green with envy or perhaps the 44-year-old "Enlightened" actress should have chosen a different fabric to be swathed in at this year's awards show...seeing as how Angelina Jolie earned the right to claim head-to-toe green sequins as her own. Jolie's 2011 Golden Globes Atelier Versace gown trumped Dern's 2012 Golden Globes Andrew Gn number.

Heidi Klum: Most compared her gown with Elle MacPherson's, but all I could think was "Emma Stone, Emma Stone, Emma Stone...last year." And no wonder, seeing as how both gowns were designed by Calvin Klein. However, I must say that although Klum is the supermodel, Emma Stone definitely looked more stunning in this variation on a theme.

Post #94: Men in Good Show - Golden Globes 2012
Let's face it, most best dressed lists and shows, such as Fashion Police, tend to focus on the women at awards shows. Albeit, there also tends to be a greater variety of gowns than tuxedos. However, I feel as if it's worthwhile to mention a few standout men within the sea of black and white. Here are The Mannequin's top three:
1. Robert Downey, Jr.: The ever-sexy Sherlock Holmes looked extremely dapper yesterday evening in white-tie attire by Gucci. If his white bow tie didn't add enough pomp and circumstance to his introduction of The Artist, then the tails on his jacket most certainly did.
2. Uggie: Speaking of The Artist, Uggie the dog was also looking quite cute in his very own doggie bow tie. That is one pup that knows how to play to an audience.

Post #93: Blogger Returns - The Best and Worst of the 2012 Golden Globes
There's nothing like starting off a new year of blogging with a red carpet critique. While runways of couture may have the most fantastical designs and magazine spreads may create fantasy lands or harken back to decades past, the red carpet is one of the few places where you will see such a conglomeration of real people wearing truly artistic fashion at once.
Being the fashion addict that I am, I tuned into E! for the entirety of its Live on the Red Carpet show. To start things off, I'd like to question the stylist of E!'s talent. While Giuliana Rancic is one of the few people who can pull off a high collar, neither of her dresses were set to impress. Kelly Osbourne, the Fashion Police constant, sported grey hair and a truly unflattering dress. While the color was pretty the cut did nothing for her, especially while seated in E!'s booth. Ryan Seacrest's Burberry suit was nothing standout, but I will say that his Harry Winston watch was something to be admired.
Speaking of Ryan Seacrest, the host seemed to have learned a great (and potentially humbling) red carpet lesson when he didn't ask Angelina Jolie who her dress was by (Atelier Versace, in case you were curious). With Jolie already having been discussed multiple times in the pre-Live segment, I had a vocal reaction upon the realization that he let her get away without discussion of her gown. It seemed like a higher-up also had a pretty vocal reaction as Ryan made a point to immediately ask Michelle Williams (his next interviewee) about her dress upon her arrival at his station.
Before we get to the best and the worst, a few other highlights: Brad Pitt still needs to cut his hair, while Ashton Kutcher finally did (did you watch him shave on camera for E! this evening too?). Mila Kunis was dressed in black Dior thanks to her new campaign with them, but was nothing noteworthy compared to her 2011 appearance. Meanwhile, Sofia Vergara praised Vera Wang for sending her dresses that "zip and close." Tsk Tsk to her Modern Family co-star, Eric Stonestreet, for only having the top button of his tuxedo done. The exuberant actor should know how to dress appropriately after his show was nominated for the second year in a row. While Reese Witherspoon seems to never have a bad red carpet moment, the one flaw in her red Zac Posen dress was the fact that in close-up HD you could see the two-sided tape necessary to prevent peek-a-boo moments. For someone who's supposedly looked to for her fashion choices, Freida Pinto's Prada dress was shapeless. Her Chopard jewels only somewhat made up for the lack of richness in the fabric. Emma Stone, who killed it in 2011 in a simplistically sexy peach gown, definitely stepped it down a notch in her two-toned Lanvin creation this year. Ricky Gervais dressed every part the devil in a black and blood-red tux and a black pleated shirt. And just as Gervais set the Golden Globes evening in motion, it's time for this blogger to get this list going.
The Worst:
5. Meryl Streep: She would have made it higher on the worst dressed list, but her acting chops and my respect for her keep Streep at number five on the worst dressed list. The embellishment on the top of her stiff black dress looked more cowgirl than lace and the structure made her hips look wide. All due respect, but fashion is not just for the young.
4. Salma Hayek: I'm sure that Ms. Hayek will be making some people's best dressed lists, but just take a moment to look at her gown. The glimmer and intensity of this Gucci dress did initially intrigue me. However, intrigue is not enough to stop the design from making Hayek look even shorter than she is. Perhaps a gold cuff or two is in order to style this gladiator chic.
3. Jessica Chastain: As much as Diane Lane can dress to look younger, Jessica Chastain aged herself about fifteen years. In a dress better suited for her character in The Help, Chastain's figure was not aided by this flesh-toned Givenchy silhouette. The high-neck and the teased hair don't help either.
2. Piper Perabo: Unlike Olivia Wilde's incredibly successful Golden Globes 2011 princess poof, Perabo's 2012 sheer, nude, and plastic-y apparel made her a princess gone awry. Not only was it see-through (on the Golden Globe stage especially), but the color did nothing for her. From Theysken's Spring 2012 Theory collection, this dress is a swing a and a miss. An intriguing back cut-out couldn't even save it.
1. Zooey Deschanel: The fact that I absolutely adore Zooey made it even more painful to see her commit such an atrocious fashion faux pas. Wearing a one-of-a-kind, custom-made Prada gown, it looked like Deschanel threw up some Witch's Brew on Halloween. The green and black concoction was nothing special in shape and the bodice and skirt seemed completely incongruent. The distinctly coiffed hair added to the harshness of this look.
The Best
6. Sarah Michelle Gellar: While I like groups of five, I just had to make this a top six. Sarah Michelle Gellar piqued my curiosity and then gained my affection in this Monique Lhullier piece. It could be an art installation with its splatter-paint affect, but the gorgeous vibrant blue and white and playful-but-flattering structure of this dress make it a red carpet showpiece. What's even cuter? Gellar told the cameras that she let her 2-year-old daughter pick it out.

5. Stacy Keibler: Red and Valentino, this dress just can't go wrong. Stacy Keibler subtly but sexily showed off her Dancing With the Stars body in this amazing gown. As if the simple front column wasn't enough to turn heads, the back of the dress's bow and cut are sure to keep people looking.

4. Nicole Kidman: It may not appear this way in the photo above, but Nicole Kidman's Versace dress was to die for. The pale tones actually brightened her skin tone giving it a healthy and glowing appearance. The beading was intricately beautiful and the fabric hugged her every curve.

3. Julie Bowen: Channeling Grace Kelly! Ms. Bowen was styled to vintage perfection tonight in a nude Reem Acra gown. The only possible flaw: According to E!, Olivia Wilde wore the same dress in off-white at the 2008 Emmy Awards (http://www.eonline.com/redcarpet/2012/golden_globes/news/bitch-stole-my-look-julie-bowen-vs-olivia-wilde/286756).
2. Charlize Theron: Well-anticipated, Charlize Theron did not let her fashion lovers and supporters down tonight. Let me just say, j'adore Christian Dior Couture. This blush-toned gown was elements of theatrical, daring, and demure rolled into one. The sparkling headband was the perfect accent to finish her look.

1. Elle MacPherson: Or should I say Elle Macfierceon. Zac Posen seems to have enjoyed playing with seams this season. While the "raw" look of this dress could turn some off, its drama deserves to be at the top of this bests list.

Post #8: So This Is The New Year
So this is the New Year…and what better way to ring it in than with one of the biggest televised parties of the year: the Golden Globes. And while this is only the first of many awards shows to be filled with fashion bests and worsts this year, it’s a good one to note.
Each awards show tends to have its own style reputation. You have the MTV VMAs with shorter, sexier, and sometimes daring outfits. You have the Oscars with their classic Hollywood glamour (definitely the most decadent and formal of all red carpet moments). And then you have the Golden Globes: a mix of class and risk.
For the attendees, the Globes have dinner and booze and therefore take on one of the “biggest” party atmospheres in this category of events. And while we may have no need to wear gowns in Hamilton, New York, we can still admire those celebrity style icons who we turn to again and again. So, without further ado I present The Mannequin’s Golden Globes Best and Worst Dressed List:
The Best:
5. Catherine Zeta-Jones: This forest-green Monique Lhuillier gown added structure and a little daring to the red carpet. While the dress wasn’t flattering at every angle, Ms. Jones still looked exquisite and classy: a goal that every celeb should have while putting their best foot forward on the red carpet.
4. Eva Longoria: While some critics judged Longoria for her somber color choice, I happen to love this mature yet sexy approach to fashion. Her all-black Zac Posen dress with a daring neckline (and back) and form-fitting flair hit just the right amount of elegance and style for the Golden Globes.
3. Megan Fox: Her Armani Privé gown with a multi-shade bandage top (complete with a single shimmery shoulder strap) and simply flowing fabric on bottom made for one classy Fox. She struck a perfect note with the delicate color while still keeping her reputation for sexiness with the gown’s form-fitting nature and mile-high slit. Aside from her fashionable competition, the only thing keeping her from being #1 on this list is the plain lack of finish on the bottom of the gown.
2. Dianna Agron: Channeling Grace Kelly…Dianna Agron looked beautiful and classic with a look that was finessed from head to toe. Her curled hair, red lipstick, and simple yet elegant J. Mendel gown made her the epitome of classic Hollywood style. The pleated gown’s neutral color is completely on trend for this spring and her Cathy Waterman necklace adds just the right amount of sparkle to keep the look from being boring. This is one starlet who didn’t get washed out by this shade of nude.

1. Olivia Wilde: Ball-gown for the win! Olivia Wilde’s chocolate brown Marchesa gown and simple hair made her an elegant princess all grown up. The jewels on her gown, which went from full concentration in the gown’s fitted bodice to increasing degrees of scarcity as the body of the gown’s fabric increased, made her the shining star of the night. While she could have run the risk of looking like she was going to junior prom, the rich color of the gown and the styling that went along with it made her both The Mannequin’s #1 as well as just about every other “Best Dressed” list’s top choice.
The Worst:
5. Leighton Meester: Her Burberry Prorsum gown was called an Amish prom dress on E! and unfortunately, I think I have to agree with that diss at the oatmeal-colored gown. Look youthful while you’re still young.
4. Scarlett Johansson: What’s with the dowdiness this season? While neutrals can work well on some dresses, the long sleeves and grandma-like texture of ScarJo’s Elie Saab gown makes her look washed out and does not complement her figure at all.
3. J. Lo: While she made some best dressed lists, her Zuhair Murad dress would’ve done better without the sheer outer shell on top. I’m always one for pure white done right, and her gown could have been sexily understated, instead of dowdy, without the extra bejeweled fabric on top.
2. Tina Fey: Fey’s navy velvet L’Wren Scott dress aged her well beyond her years. The sleeves were reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s on-stage transformation into the “Black Swan” in Darren Aronofsky’s latest critically acclaimed film. As for the rest of the dress, since when is velvet ever in?
1. Michelle Williams: Most people and stylists agree: Boxy. Unflattering. Ugly. Washed Out Nude. Flower Power. Just “ew.” And to think…it’s Valentino.
And Then There’s Helena Bonham Carter:
While Bonham Carter seems to be dominating all of the worst dressed lists, let’s just admit it: this woman can wear whatever the hell she wants and get away with it because she’s Helena Bonham Carter. Her different colored shoes, cacophonous shin-length Vivienne Westwood dress, wild hair, and red-carpet sunglasses made for one objectively ugly and ragged look. But she’s Helena Bonham Carter, and we’ll love her even more for stunts like this.
